Flooring

Any changes to floor surfaces present a potential trip, slip, and fall hazard. Risk mitigation steps must be implemented.

Raised floors, steps, and ramp edging

Any changes to floor levels present a safety hazard and/or accessibility challenges and must comply with the relevant National Construction Code (NCC), and Australian Standard and Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

When planning your flooring, please comply with the following.

  • The outer edge of your flooring must fit within your stand footprint. This includes if you are adding ramped edging to your main flooring. 3 metre clear aisles must be maintained.
  • Treads must be marked with safety tape or similar, to highlight variable step height.

Viewing platforms and steps

Raised platforms and steps must comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA).

  • Ensure steps are balanced, and handrails steady. Treads should be marked with safety tape.
  • Steps must be positioned within your stand footprint.
  • Viewing platforms should be fitted with handrails, or other suitable barrier, to prevent falls from height.
High-contrast tape on the carpet surrounding your steps is one way to help minimise trips.

Adhesives

Costs will be incurred if carpet is damaged.

  • If ordering decals, ensure you order decals suitable for removal from carpet, removable with no residue left behind.
  • If taping edges of carpet or rugs, ensure tape is wide enough to grip both carpets, and has suitable tack, that can be removed without leaving residual gum.
  • If taping edges of foam tiles or other material, ensure tape is designed to grip to carpet and your flooring surface type, and is removable, with no residue.
  • Removed flooring with care.
  • Bring suitable cleaning equipment to bump out, if there is any risk of sticky residue.
